Paula H.

Raised in the Winchester area for over half of her life, Paula graduated from Warren County High School with an Advanced Diploma. She then went on to earn her Associate’s Degree in General Studies with a strong emphasis in Mathematics from Lord Fairfax Community College in 2015. While in college she gravitated toward the Mathematics department and completed studies through Statistics, Calculus II, and Chemistry II. Having completed courses online, Paula understands the importance dedication and self-motivation plays in a student’s education. Paula is furthering her studies through online open courseware with intentions of obtaining her Master’s Degree in Mathematics with a Teaching Certification. Having a diverse background in both Math and English, Paula works with students in the areas of Algebra I and II, Chemistry, Geometry, Pre-calculus, Chemistry, Phonics, Reading Comprehension, Reading Mechanics, as well as assisting with SAT courses. Throughout her life, Paula has been a caregiver to both her younger brother and her grandfather who suffered from dementia. These experiences have greatly influenced her patience and understanding. When she is not tutoring or volunteering for Riverside Church in the children’s ministry, Paula can be found singing in her church’s praise team, reading, or spending quality time with her friends and family. 

Crystal T.


Crystal was born in Sandusky, Ohio but grew up in Central New York. While in high school Crystal worked in the local public library which cultivated her love of reading and writing. After high school, Crystal went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in English with a Minor in Management from State University of New York at Cortland with the intentions of becoming a librarian. Crystal soon realized that she loved the library because of the opportunities it provided for her to learn. This inspired her to further her education and obtain a dual Master’s Degree in Education and Library and Information Science from Kent State University. Crystal recently obtained her English and Library Media teaching licenses for the Commonwealth of Virginia and has started working in a local school teaching English Grammar to struggling students. Having discovered the important role learning plays in her life, Crystal seeks to help students recognize their own abilities through her teaching methods that often showcase her own love of reading and writing. Crystal is well versed in English Grammar, Comprehension, Vocabulary, Mechanics, and is HLC’s lead SAT English Instructor. During her free time, Crystal can usually be found reading a good book or spending time with her friends.

Hannah A.


Hannah is a Liberty University Online Academy senior and a former Hometown Learning Centers success story. She is a dedicated student and has already completed some college courses during her high school career. Hannah plans to attend Liberty University in the fall of 2018 in the pursuit of a psychology degree. After completing her undergraduate degree, Hannah plans to attend Law school before entering the workforce. Hannah is a self-motivated homeschool student and understands the importance of studying and understanding what you are learning. These skills, coupled with her likeable, bubbly personality make her a perfect fit for elementary and middle school students in the areas of Mathematics, English, Science, History, homework help, and study skills. In addition to her school studies, Hannah has earned her 4th degree black belt and numerous awards and trophies for her competitions in Tae Kwon Do. When she is not studying or tutoring, Hannah enjoys listening to K-pop, crushing on Kylo Ren, and collecting all things Hello Kitty. ​

Hailing originally from Northern Virginia, Max graduated from Woodbridge Senior High School in 2014. In the Fall of the same year Max entered Shenandoah University as an Elementary Education Major. After taking a Pre-Calculus class, Max became so inspired by his professor’s excitement and passion for teaching math that he changed his degree course. He is now pursuing a Bachelor’s in Mathematics with a Minor in Secondary Education. Prior to joining the Hometown team, Max was a tutor at Shenandoah’s Math Enrichment Center and understands the difference a tutor can make in a student’s understanding. Upon completing his degree, Max plans to pursue a career teaching mathematics at the high school level in hopes of igniting a passion for mathematics in others. Max works hard to help students understand complex math concepts presented ​

Victoria B, Center Director.

​​Victoria graduated in 2011 from Orange County High School with an Advanced Honors Diploma. She is currently a student at Liberty University pursuing a degree in Education and Counseling concentrated in childhood development and communication. She has helped her mom homeschool her two younger brothers throughout the course of their education, which inspired her love of teaching. Having lived overseas, she has gained an interest for cultural diversity, politics, and the significance of communication and learning styles. She was a dance teacher and choreographer for 7 years teaching primarily in the styles of ballet, contemporary, and jazz dance. In her free time she likes reading, doing puzzles, watching Disney movies and playing with her kitten, Harley. She still buys CD’s regularly and shops at Target twice a week. Like most young adults, she isn’t exactly sure how life experiences will shape her into the person she is becoming, but she is excited to see all that is in store for her future.

Matthew B.

Hailing originally from Forest, VA, Matthew is a new resident of Winchester. He's enjoyed studying mathematics since his youth and has six years experience as a freelance tutor. In 2011, Matthew earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Lynchburg College. His senior thesis examined the mathematical properties of the chessboard and chess pieces, and his performance as a math major earned him induction into the Pi Mu Epsilon mathematics society. Matthew is also an accomplished musician, and in 2014 he completed a Master of Music degree in Collaborative Piano at UNC School of the Arts. He often accompanies music students at Shenandoah Conservatory, in addition to accompanying Winchester Musica Viva, a choral ensemble, and working as assistant to the music director at Trinity Church in Upperville. Outside of mathematics and music, Matthew enjoys playing with technology, re-watching every episode of Frasier (his favorite sitcom), and spending time with his flutist girlfriend, Sarah.

Ethan R.


Ethan is a State University of New York at Geneseo and University of North Carolina at Charlotte alum. While at SUNY he pursued a dual major in mathematics and applied physics. During his junior year, Ethan was inducted into the school’s chapter of Sigma Pi Sigma physics honor society. After graduating in 2015 with a B.S. in Applied Physics and a B.A. in Mathematics Ethan continued his education at UNCC to pursue a Master’s Degree in Optical Science and Engineering, which he completed in May of 2017. Throughout his college career, Ethan worked as a lab instructor, a grader, and a tutor in the subjects of physics and mathematics. Having struggled himself initially with understanding physics and advanced math, Ethan understands the importance of a good tutor and strives to meet that standard. He is well versed in Physics, Chemistry, Algebra 1 & 2, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Calculus, and is the lead SAT Math Instructor. When he is not tutoring, Ethan is working to continue his education by taking classes online at the University of Arizona for a Masters of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering. In his down time Ethan enjoys the art of photography and reading a good classic book.

Rhiannon B.

Rhiannon is a James Wood High School Junior and a former student of Hometown Learning Centers. She is a devoted student working toward an Advanced High School Diploma. Rhiannon has hopes of attending Bridgewater College in the fall of 2019 to earn a degree in biology with hopes of working in the nutrition and athletic fields. Because of her involvement in track every spring, Rhiannon understands the importance of practice, dedication, and teamwork and uses these skills to help students with their studies. She is the oldest of six and has experience helping her siblings with their various homework tasks. Her knowledge spans the subjects of Mathematics, English, Science, History, homework help, and study skills. Whens he is not studying or spending time with her family, Rhiannon enjoys hanging out with her friends and learning everything she can about photography.
